The federal government, under the direction of Housing Minister Sean Fraser, is launching a new initiative to accelerate the home-building process. This involves the development of a catalogue containing pre-approved home designs, readily accessible to developers.

This policy harkens back to the post-Second World War era, where the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) utilized standardized designs to expedite housing construction.

The plan comes in response to a report co-authored by housing expert Mike Moffatt, which recommended the development of such a catalogue as a key strategy to address the housing crisis.

Initially, the catalogue will focus on low-rise builds, potentially expanding to include higher-density designs in the future. This initiative aims to streamline the building process, ultimately increasing housing supply and affordability.
