An imam of a mosque was beaten to death by three masked miscreants in Ajmer, India’s northeastern state of Rajasthan. NDTV reported that the killing took place inside a mosque in Ajmer on Saturday.

It is said that the imam named Mohammad Mahir was sleeping with six children inside the mosque located in Kanchannagar, Ramganj, Ajmer. He was infected at this time.

Three masked miscreants entered the mosque and attacked Mohammad Mahir, NDTV said. At that time they beat him severely.

30-year-old Imam Mohammad Mahir is a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Rampura area, police said.

The miscreants threatened to kill the imam’s children if they screamed during the beating. Later they left him seriously injured and fled with his mobile phone. Miscreants take away mobile phones so that children cannot call anyone for help.

After the accused left, the imam’s children came out of the mosque and informed the neighbors about the incident. Police said no one has been arrested in this incident so far. Efforts are on to identify and arrest the accused.

Rabindra Khinchi, officer-in-charge of Ramganj police station, said that the reason behind the beating of the imam inside the mosque is not yet known. Police are collecting CCTV footage of the area.

Police said a case has been registered under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the killing of the imam.
