Prime Minister Mark Carney is calling for calm and the protection of civilian lives as tensions rises across the Middle East following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Speaking at a conference in Mumbai on Saturday morning, only hours after the strikes began, Carney described the moment as deeply serious and unpredictable. His tone was measured, but the concern was clear: innocent people must not bear the brunt of the growing conflict.

He call on all parties to protect civilian lives as best as possible in what is a very serious situation.

Carney stressed that Canada had no role in planning or carrying out the military action. Instead, he positioned the crisis within a broader geopolitical context one shaped by long-standing fears over nuclear proliferation, regional instability and Iran’s alleged support for militant groups.

He reiterated Canada’s consistent stance that Iran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. In a joint statement with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, the government said diplomatic efforts over the years have failed to fully curb Iran’s nuclear activities or its involvement with proxy groups in the region.

On a statement he said “Canada’s position remains clear: Iran must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons,”.

At the same time, Carney expressed support for efforts led by the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capability. He also voiced solidarity with the Iranian people, describing their struggle against what he called an oppressive regime as long and courageous.

As the situation continues to unfold, Ottawa says it is promptly monitoring all the developments. Canadians currently in Iran have been advised to shelter in place. Those in neighboring countries are being urged to follow local authorities’ guidance and take necessary actions.

Global Affairs Canada has also updated its travel advisories for several countries in the Gulf region, warning of ongoing military activity and heightened security risks.

With the region on edge and the risk of further escalation looming, Canadian officials say their focus remains on civilian safety and maintaining stability in an increasingly volatile moment.
