Vancouver Issues Warning Over Parking Scams Targeting World Cup Visitors

Authorities are encouraging anyone who comes across a suspicious text, ticket, or QR code to report it promptly.

The City of Vancouver is urging both residents and visitors to stay alert after a wave of parking-related scams began circulating through the community, with authorities receiving a growing number of complaints in recent weeks.

Fraudsters have been sending text messages to unsuspecting recipients, falsely claiming to represent the city and demanding immediate payment for supposed outstanding parking tickets. City officials were quick to clarify that this is not how legitimate ticketing works if a parking ticket has genuinely been issued, it will either arrive by mail or be placed directly on the vehicle. The city will never contact anyone about a ticket through a text message.

Beyond the fake texts, scammers have also taken a more hands-on approach. Counterfeit QR code stickers have reportedly been placed across parking lots throughout the city, designed to redirect unsuspecting drivers to fraudulent websites. Vancouver officials confirmed that the city does not use QR codes as part of its parking system, so any QR code encountered in a parking lot should be treated with serious suspicion.

The timing of these scams is no coincidence. With thousands of football fans pouring into Vancouver for the FIFA World Cup, opportunists appear to be capitalizing on the influx of unfamiliar visitors who may be less aware of how local parking systems operate. Tourists navigating an unfamiliar city are naturally more vulnerable to these kinds of deceptions.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who comes across a suspicious text, ticket, or QR code to report it promptly. A single report, officials noted, could be enough to stop someone else from falling victim and losing money to these schemes.

The bottom line from the city is simple slow down, stay cautious, and think twice before clicking any link related to parking payments.
