Toronto is facing a surge in car thefts, with vehicles stolen at an alarming rate of approximately every 40 minutes.

Toronto is facing a surge in car thefts, with vehicles stolen at an alarming rate of approximately every 40 minutes. Police Chief Myron Demkiw reports over 12,000 auto thefts in 2023.

Violent carjackings have doubled compared to last year, now at 68 incidents in 2024. Home invasions related to car theft have also seen a drastic 400% increase.

In response, a joint task force between Toronto Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police was established. The task force has resulted in 121 arrests, 730 charges, and the recovery of 157 vehicles.
