Canada is increasing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

The Canadian government has announced a sweeping new tariff that will impose a 100% duty on electric vehicles imported from China. This move aligns with similar actions taken by other Western nations.

Canada has already levied a tariff exceeding 6% on Chinese electric vehicles. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau detailed plans to further elevate these duties.

Trudeau says, “Countries like China are choosing to provide themselves with unfair advantages in the global market by jeopardizing the security of our critical and essential industries, as well as putting Canadian auto and steel workers out of work.”

Trudeau also announced a 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminum from China. These measures will come into effect from October.

Notably, the European Union is planning to impose tariffs of up to 36.3% on electric vehicles made in China. Meanwhile, the United States also introduced a 100% tariff in May. Washington officials say Chinese subsidies have “destroyed the level playing field.”
