Wealth, Addiction, and Humanity

Arafat Rahman

Money can buy food, shelter, and luxury. But whether it can buy happiness remains a matter of debate.

When one becomes addicted to money, they turn blind to the beauty of the world around them. Money is necessary—only up to the point where it helps us remain truly human. But when someone sees money as everything, it’s often wiser to keep your distance.

Once money gets entangled in relationships or self-interest, it can turn people into something less than human. That’s when one begins to steal, accept bribes, or get trapped in corruption, moving closer to moral ruin. Often, people around the wrongdoer fail to recognize the signs of greed and deceit—that very ignorance pushes society further down a dangerous path.

Money can buy food, shelter, and luxury. But whether it can buy happiness remains a matter of debate. Can money truly purchase peace of mind? The ability to enjoy a full moon’s glow, the rhythm of falling rain, or the gentle murmur of a river—these are pleasures that fade when one is consumed by greed. Time for reflection and mindful living stands on the other side of money’s obsession. We must ask ourselves: are we walking the right path?

The need for money is undeniable, but excessive greed leads to downfall. When vast wealth accumulates in the hands of the corrupt, they begin to feel invincible. Wealth breeds arrogance, cloaks one in falsehood, and slowly distances a person from their humanity.

Let us earn only as much as we need, honestly and with integrity. Ill-gotten wealth rarely brings lasting benefit—it often fuels further wrongdoing. Even if such money is passed on, it becomes a burden for future generations. In truth, the real wealth lies in a person’s mindset and moral compass. That is why, for the greater good of humanity, it’s best to find contentment in what we earn honestly.

Let us be grateful for enough, live simply, and never forget—true richness is found not in bank accounts, but in kindness, integrity, and the quiet moments spent under open skies.
