Tuntuni birds were more or less seen everywhere in Bangladesh. This beautiful little bird was seen in large numbers in Kachua. Once upon a time, there used to be chattering chattering of various kinds of birds, known and unknown birds. Among so many birds, the most familiar bird was the Tuntuni. But now Tuntuni bird is disappearing from Kachua. They make a nest by wrapping the leaves of the tree like a thong and sewing them with the help of their lips. So it is also called tailor bird.
Tuntuni, which has a strong place in numerous rhymes, stories and songs written by Bengali children’s writers, including the famous children’s writer Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury’s ‘Tuntuni ar Rajar Ghabi’, is rarely seen in reality. It was very enjoyable to always jump around in the bushes and forests around the homestead, dance with the tail raised, tin-tin-tin, tin-tin.
Tuntuni is about 13 cm in size. Chest and belly are white. Wing surface and head olive reddish. The tail is steep. It has dark spots. There are 15 species of Tuntuni in the world. There are three species in Bangladesh namely Black throat, Pahari and Pati. Tuntuni’s voice is very sweet. Even from a distance, you can hear their tweet-tweet, chip-chip, tun-tun tune. Tuntuni birds are very fickle by nature. Never sits in one place. This is there, this is not. Beans, gourds, groundnuts, sunflowers, figs, bamboos, tamarind trees, wild trees, forests and corners of houses could be seen. However, this bird is gradually disappearing due to the destruction of trees, bushes, canals, rivers and reservoirs and the effect of climate change.
Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Sawkat Hossain Sumon said, Tuntuni birds are very beneficial for the environment. Once upon a time, this bird was seen everywhere in villages and towns. It doesn’t look like that anymore. Due to indiscriminate destruction of the bird’s habitat, trees, bushes, etc., this bird is basically disappearing. The habitat cannot be destroyed to save this bird from extinction. Due to habitat destruction, they are unable to lay eggs and reproduce properly.
