The number of asylum applications in Germany has decreased

The number of asylum applications in Germany fell sharply in the first half of the year. Germany has the highest number of asylum applications in the European Union (EU), despite a decrease in asylum applications in the country this year compared to last year.

The number of asylum applications in Germany fell significantly in the first six months of this year, according to Welt am Sonntag. They published a report on statistics from the European Union’s Asylum Agency. Sontag said 20 percent fewer applications were received this year than in the first half of 2023.

Last April, Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Fesser announced that the success of the harmonized asylum policy was in sight. He said that since October 2023, hundreds of traffickers have been arrested and more than 17,000 unauthorized entries have been prevented.

The highest number of asylum applications in Germany came from Syria (29 percent), Afghanistan (18 percent) and Turkey (ten percent). According to the report, refugees from Syria and Afghanistan mainly apply for asylum in Germany. Fifty percent of Syrian refugees applied for asylum in Germany, while 48 percent of migrants from Afghanistan applied for asylum in Germany.

Asylum applications in Germany fell sharply compared to the same period last year, as did Norway and Switzerland within the European Union. But the number of applicants is huge. In the first six months of this year, Germany received 499,470 asylum applications. This number is much lower than the same period last year.

Tino Cropalla, the leader of the country’s far-right Alternative for Europe (AfD), said internal border controls would be introduced in the two states if they come to power after September’s elections. He told this information to German public broadcaster ARD on Sunday.

He said that if the AfD party comes to power, the process of distribution of immigrants among 16 states will be stopped. According to him, a program will be held for the first 100 days. Where we will be talking about border control quite clearly.
