A long time ago people discovered a wonderful substance that brought a different kind of test to their faces. This magical substance was called chewing gum. The mystery of the history of chewing gum will be revealed in today’s ArtCal.
The story begins thousands of years ago, with ancient civilizations like the Aztecs and Greeks. These clever people enjoyed chewing the sap of various plants. They believed that this juice had special properties that could help clean their teeth and freshen their breath. Little did they know that they were about to achieve something big.
Chewing gum as we know it began to take shape around the 19th century. It all started with an American entrepreneur named John Curtis who started selling spruce tree resin for people to chew. It quickly became popular, but the taste was not as good.
Fortunately, another man named Thomas Adams was a photographer and inventor; Attempts were made to produce flavored chewing gum from gum extracted from the sapodilla tree found in Mexico.
In 1871, after numerous experiments, Thomas Adams successfully introduced flavored chewing gum. He started manufacturing and selling chewing gum, which became instantly popular. Thomas Adams mixed sweet and aromatic flavors that people loved.
In the late 19th century, an inventor named William Wrigley Jr. started his own chewing gum business. He introduced innovative marketing strategies. This strategy helped his business grow.
The innovation didn’t stop there. Innovators have experimented with different flavors, creating a wide range of alternatives for chewing gum lovers. Bubble gum has become popular with peppermint, spearmint, fruit flavors and even the ability to blow bubbles.
