Patriarchal culture has been an obstacle to women’s progress in society since ancient times. This culture has not only limited the development of women’s personality, but has also kept them backward in socio-economic, political and cultural fields. The basic idea of patriarchy is that men will be at the center of everything and women’s role will be limited to household chores. However, with the contribution of women in various fields of society and changing times, the path of women’s progress has been paved.
The main feature of patriarchal society is control over women and limiting their freedom. Traditionally, women are confined to household chores, deprived of education and the workplace are important aspects of this system. As a result, women have often been victims of social discrimination and deprived of the opportunity to utilize their potential. Violence against women and negative ideas about the role of women in society are manifestations of patriarchy. This culture hurts women’s self-confidence and prevents them from improving their socio-economic status.
Although patriarchy is a long-standing problem, women are constantly fighting against this culture and creating a strong foundation for themselves. Issues such as the expansion of women’s education, increased participation of women in the workplace, and legal protection have played a major role in the progress of women. Education is the biggest tool for women’s empowerment. Once, education was limited for women, but now they are achieving significant success in higher education. The progress of women’s education in Bangladesh is commendable. It has created opportunities for them to enter the workplace and helped them become financially independent. Women’s participation in the workplace has challenged the concept of a patriarchal society. Women are now leading in the fields of industry, technology, health, law, and administration. However, despite this progress, women still face discrimination and adversity.
Violence against women is a major reflection of patriarchal culture. Physical, mental, and economic oppression of women is the main obstacle to their progress. To stop this type of violence, the attitude towards women in society must change. Legal protection can play an important role in reducing violence against women. The Anti-Atrocities against Women and Children Act and the initiative to eliminate discrimination against women in Bangladesh are commendable. However, proper implementation of these laws is still a major challenge.
To change patriarchal culture, it is essential to increase awareness in society. The concept of gender equality must be included in the education system and a respectful attitude towards women must be developed. The concept of equality towards women must be established from within the family, which will play a role in social change in the long run. To ensure the progress of women, we must move away from patriarchal culture and believe in the principle of equality. To ensure equal opportunities for women, the government, family, and society must work together at every level.
Although patriarchal culture is a major obstacle to women’s progress, women are constantly overcoming this challenge. Women’s empowerment has been possible through education, employment, and legal protection. However, to establish an equal society, it is essential to change traditional ideas and establish a respectful attitude towards women. Working together, it is possible to build an equal society, where both women and men have equal rights and can contribute to the development of society together.
