Lawyers appointed in India to protect GI rights of Tangail sarees

The Bangladesh government has hired a legal firm in India to fight the legal battle to protect the GI rights of Tangail sarees.

The Bangladesh government has hired a legal firm in India to fight the legal battle to protect the GI rights of Tangail sarees. Mason & Associates has been appointed to handle the case in Indian courts.

This information has been informed in writing to the High Court bench led by Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar from the Ministry of Industry on Monday. At the same time, a list of more than 100 GI products from different regions of Bangladesh has been submitted to the court.

Barrister Sarowat Siraj Shukla appeared for the writ in the court.

Earlier, the High Court directed the government to list all the GI products of Bangladesh on February 19. The list was asked to be submitted to the court by March 19. At the same time, the court issued a ruling asking why the authorities’ failure to list and register GI products would not be illegal.

Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar. Rashed Jahangir High Court bench gave the order. Industry Secretary, Commerce Secretary, Agriculture Secretary, Culture Secretary, etc. have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

On February 18, barrister Sarowat Siraj Shukla, the daughter of Tangail, filed a public interest writ in the High Court asking for instructions to prepare a list of all GI products in Bangladesh.

Recently, the neighboring country India has recognized the hundreds of years old Tangail saree as a GI product. Then on February 8, Tangail saree was recognized as a GI product by the Ministry of Industry of the country.

When India recognized the Tangail saree as a GI product of West Bengal, the matter started a lot of debate and criticism. That’s when the issue of listing desi GI products came up.
