Last June, the first flight landed at Nepal’s new Pokhara International Airport. This airport in Pokhara, the country’s second largest city, was built with Chinese funds.

Six months after its inauguration, the first aircraft landed on its runway. It also came from China. The Airbus A319 model aircraft of Sichuan Airlines is named first.

Special arrangements were made at the airport to welcome the passengers on board. The flight was carrying Chinese athletes and officials. They came to Nepal for a preeti dragon boat competition. Nepal has built this expensive airport in the hands of Chinese companies and financed by China. Through this, China got a big contract but Nepal is in huge debt, according to a report of New York Times.

It is claimed that through this, Nepal has become more involved in China’s debt. Nepal had been trying to build an international airport in Pokhara since the 1970s.

The country hoped that the airport would make the city popular with tourists from around the world. But this project has been stalled for the past few decades. The Pokhara airport project did not see the light of day due to political unrest, bureaucracy and financial problems. Finally China came forward to build it. Nepal’s airport is one of the steps taken by China to challenge US dominance in the world.
