Canada’s female fertility rate has hit a historic low. The current rate is the lowest since Statistics Canada began keeping data on it nearly a century ago.
The agency’s latest figures, released recently, show the birth rate fell to 1.33 children per woman in 2022, well below the replacement level of around 2.1.
Canada’s birth rate fell from 1.43 in 2021 and continues a downward trend that began in 2009.
Statistics Canada says that’s the picture across the country, with record declines in every province and territory.
