Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada is interested in joining the second phase of the AUKUS security partnership alongside the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. This potential expansion comes as Japan is also poised to join the alliance.

AUKUS was originally established to help Australia develop nuclear-powered submarines. The second phase will likely focus on additional defense technologies. As part of this, Canada is considering acquiring nuclear submarines to better protect its sovereignty in the Arctic.

Trudeau’s comments followed the release of Canada’s new defense policy, which prioritizes protecting the Arctic and includes increased military spending.
