Bangladesh’s twelfth national parliament election will be held on January 7

The Election Commission has decided the date of the 12th National Parliament election of Bangladesh on Sunday, January 7. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal announced the election schedule after 7 pm on Wednesday (November 15).

At 5:00 PM in the election committee meeting in Agargaon, it was decided to announce the schedule along with the date and time of the election. The Chief Election Commissioner announced the schedule in his address to the nation at 7 pm.

CEC’s speech was simultaneously broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Radio. This is the first time the schedule announcement has been broadcasted live. Previously recorded speeches were always broadcast.

After the 11th National Election on December 30, 2018, the first session of Parliament will be held on January 30, 2019. Accordingly, the term of this parliament will end on January 29, 2024. According to the constitution, elections must be held within 90 days before this.

As such, the countdown to the election has started on November 1. There is an obligation to hold elections by January 29. Earlier, the commission has informed several times about the preparations for holding the polls at the end of December or the beginning of January.
