The central government of India has alerted the West Bengal government about the new strain of adenovirus infection. In the meantime, the Indian Council of Medical Councils (ICMR) has sent a letter in this regard to the West Bengal Health Department.
The letter states that a new species of adenovirus has been developed. A large proportion of children infected with adenovirus in West Bengal from 2022 to 2023 were infected with the new strain.
The letter alleges that the state government has underestimated the number of cases and deaths due to adenoviruses like dengue and corona. However, the West Bengal Health Department has denied this allegation.
However, they have accepted that the virus may create a more complicated situation next year. In fact, the health department official thinks that the situation may become complicated if it is not prepared from now.
According to ICMR, the killing power of the new species of virus is very high. And that’s why the incidence of child death due to adeno virus is very high.
The new strain of adenovirus has been identified as ‘B7/3’. Although this species of adenovirus was previously found in Argentina and Portugal, this is the first time it has appeared in India. ICMR says this type of virus has been found in sputum tests of infected children in West Bengal.
According to the ICMR, sputum samples of a total of 3,115 people were collected from Kolkata and neighboring districts, of which 1,257 were found to have adenovirus. Among them, 40 people were found to have a new type of virus. Many of those who were found to have the virus died.
Doctor Satyaki Halder told Deutsche Welle that the effects of adenovirus were well understood last year. Many children have been affected by this virus. Many have died. The new species being talked about is extremely deadly. As a result, it is necessary to be aware of this issue from now.
