At least 9 people lost their lives when a 6-storey building under construction suddenly collapsed in the Garden Reach area of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. More than a dozen others were injured in the incident. The injured were rescued and admitted to a local hospital.

According to a report of Bengali daily Anandabazar in West Bengal, the bodies of two more people have been recovered in the collapse of the multi-storey building of Garden Reach late on Sunday night. With this, the death toll in the building collapse has increased to eight. Two deaths have been reported since Monday morning. Later, four more people were rescued and taken to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

According to the report citing the local administration, those who died in the Garden Reach building collapse are Shama Begum (44), Hasina Khatun (55), Rizwan Alam (22), Akbar Ali (34), Mohammad Wasik, Mohammad Imran and Ramzan Ali. . They were rescued from the wreckage and taken to a local hospital. The doctor declared the two dead there. Later Rizwan, Akbar, Wasik, Imran and Ramzan were declared dead by SSKM Hospital.

Anandabazar said 20 more people were rescued from the rubble. Besides, one person is still trapped under the rubble. Rescue work is going on.

However, the local administration says that at least 20 people were injured in the collapse of the building in Garden Reach. They were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment. A few were taken to SSKM besides the local hospital. At least four of them have been discharged from SSKM after initial treatment.

A person named Mohammad Wasim has been arrested in this building collapse incident. The multi-storied building under construction of Ward No. 134 of Garden Reach collapsed on the neighboring slum around 12 o’clock local time on Sunday. Some huts were completely destroyed. Kolkata Mayor and State Municipal and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim reached there in the night immediately after the building collapse. Later, the Chief Minister of the state Mamata Banerjee also visited the spot.

A few days ago, Mamata got an injury on her forehead after falling at her house. He went to Garden Reach in the morning with a bandage on his forehead. At that time he visited the area and went to the hospital and talked to the injured. Firhad Hakim said that the government will give compensation of five lakh rupees to the families of each of the deceased and one lakh rupees to the injured. Mamata also assured punishment of the guilty.

Nasiruddin, a family member of deceased Akbar Ali, said, “Akbar used to make kites. My sister’s condition is also very bad. There used to be rent. The extent of the damage to the house is not yet known. We got the news in the morning.”
