How long will women be questioned because of clothing?

The number of such women in the society is very few. In a sense, it is difficult to find. Women’s clothing and sarcastic comments go hand in hand. The so-called men of the society, whether they can do anything else or not, can make bitter comments about women on the way. A kind of ego works in them in doing such work. How is ego? That is, both men and women are going as they like by road or bus. Suddenly a man gets very interested and starts talking about some woman. The subject of these informal conversations is often about women’s clothing.

At one point the conversation reached an obscene level. Some men in the society can never stay away from such talk. A kind of arrogance works in them in doing this. The pride is that they represent the male race. So women have the right to say whatever they want. If you pay attention, you will see that such incidents are happening all over the country. The strange thing is that when the incident happened, the noble people who were present in the vicinity watched this scene silently with folded hands and locks on their faces. Not a single word comes out of their mouths to protest injustice. This is the traditional view of our society.

One such incident involving women’s clothing took place on April 17 at Uttara’s North Metrorail station. That day an entrepreneur named Sabina Yasmin Madhavi was walking from her home to the showroom as usual. An old man was riding a bicycle by him on the way. At one point the old man made an offensive remark about Madhavi’s dress after asking her where she lived.

When asked what happened that day, Madhavi said, ‘I was going to the showroom from home that afternoon. On the way, an old man asked where my house was. He wants to know this with some anger. So I was surprised and asked, what do you do knowing where my house is? He then said, “Your dress is not good.” Hearing this, my mood worsened. When I asked why I said this to him, he started arguing with me and called me a “stupid girl”. Many people walked past me that day. They keep telling me, “Just drop it, you don’t need to argue.” But I protested the old man’s words.

Madhavi is a woman entrepreneur. In a very short time, she has become popular as a hard working woman entrepreneur. In 2017, he started the journey of ‘Madhavi Mart’. Madhavi Mart’s signature product is Nakshikantha. Customers know Madhavi for Nakshikantha for last 7 years. She also does awareness work for women’s health protection through the dividend of ‘Madhavi Mart’. He is mainly working on uterine cancer and breast cancer.

Our society has come to a point where women are not safe anywhere. On the streets, women often have to hear harsh words about their clothes or skin color. This is a kind of illegal practice. A man cannot talk about the color of another man’s clothes. Did we learn this from our growing environment? If the answer to this question is ‘no’, then why are women facing harassment on the streets?

Harassment of women basically refers to making indecent comments to a woman or a girl in the course of her normal behavior or activities. What the old man did to Madhavi in Uttara basically falls into the category of female harassment. Which is seen a lot on the road lately. Bullying has become a much larger disorder at this time. There used to be a time when society’s deranged boys used to molest women. But now along with the slanderers, the young, the elderly are also getting involved in the harassment of women. The main reason behind this is the degradation of society. Due to the degeneration, we are forgetting what is our practice and what is the practice of the illegitimate. It indicates the nature of the incident in Uttara.

There is a question in Uttara’s mind. That is, why women have to be harassed again and again with clothes. Women don’t say much about men’s clothes. Who wears which clothes, be it a woman or a man. It depends on individual preference and comfort. In this case, it is inappropriate to comment against someone. So the question arises, will this behavior towards women continue for ages?

According to the Law and Arbitration Center’s (ASC) Human Rights Violation Numerical Report (January-March), 55 women have been victims of sexual harassment-related violence in the last three months. Apart from this, 45 people were assaulted by the miscreants, 26 people were injured in the conflict over the origin of the miscreants. Apart from this, 1 woman committed suicide due to sexual harassment. On the other hand, 4 men were killed by miscreants while protesting against sexual harassment.

At the end of the day we can’t really be human beings. We are gradually losing the place of mutual respect. The saddest part was that when Madhavi wrote about what happened to her on social media, the comment house of that status saw some nonsense, dirty comments. Most of those comments were showering the older man with praise. These comments represent this society. It seems that social psychology has decayed by looking at this kind of sarcastic comment. As a proof of this, we will have to look at the statistics of torture of women and girls given above, which this society is not doing any protest or resistance. Every man is busy with himself. If the men in this society were as concerned about women’s clothing as they were against these crimes, we might have been a different country. If we want to stop this psychological decay, society needs a radical change. Madhavi lodged a GD at Turag police station in this incident. DB is investigating the incident. Hopefully, the culture of impunity will not work in Madhvi’s case as well. She will get proper justice, so that no other woman will have to suffer harassment like Uttara’s incident.
