All government madrassas in India’s northeastern state of Assam have already been closed. And this time the state wants to close the private madrasas too. Basically, the ruling BJP government wants to close 1000 private madrasas in the state and convert them into ordinary schools.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced this on the first day of the new year. This information was reported by the Indian media NDTV in a report on Monday (January 1) night.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said on Monday that the Assam government is trying to close down private madrasas and convert them into regular schools. His government has already closed all government-run madrassas in the state and converted them into ordinary schools.
Himanta Biswa Sharma said, ‘Private madrasas are protected by the Constitution of India. Because it is written in the constitution, the government cannot touch educational institutions run by minorities. Even they are not covered under the RTE Act. However, the Assam Police and the Education Department are working together in this regard. So we can reduce at least 1000 private madrassas. It will come down from 3,000 to 2,000 and we are discussing it with private madrasa organizations.
He said, ‘There are five separate communities known as Assamese Muslim community, we have approved the census and we are verifying the villages where Assamese Muslim communities live, also in the wards of the municipal area where Assamese Muslims live, we are verifying. We will complete this census by the end of 2024.
The Assam chief minister also said that his government would complete a new census of Assamese Muslims by the end of this year.
