Two men, 35-year-old Shane Cochrane and 40-year-old Shane Spurvey, both of Dunville are charged with attempted murder and a number of other serious offences following a shooting that occurred during a home invasion in Dunville on December 23, 2022.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. on December 23, Placentia RCMP received the report of a shooting at a residential property in Thorne’s Trailer Park in Dunville. Police attended the scene and learned that Spurvey and Cochrane forced entry into the home armed with a baseball bat and a firearm respectively. Two occupants of the home, a man and a woman, were assaulted and the man was shot.

The victim of the shooting was transported to the Placentia Health Centre and onto the Health Sciences Centre for medical treatment of a gun shot wound. He is currently recovering from his injuries.

Spurvey and Cochrane had departed the scene prior to police arrival. Both were arrested at homes in Dunville midway through the day on December 24, 2022. Spurvey was arrested without incident at a residence on Clarke’s Hill shortly before noon. Cochrane, who had barricaded himself in a residence on Ville Marie Drive throughout the night, refusing to exit, was arrested later in the day after officers with the RCMP Emergency Response Team breached the home. The two men attended court on Christmas Day and were remanded into custody.

The RCMP East District General Investigation Section was engaged and, in continuing with the investigation, officers obtained and executed a search warrant on December 30, 2022, and entered a residence on Fort Louis Road in Jerseyside. Officers recovered a number of items of stolen property from a break and enter that occurred at a home in Freshwater between December 17 – December 20, 2022. Spurvey and Cochrane are now charged in relation to that break and enter.

The two appear in court today.

Spurvey and Cochrane are charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Attempted murder
  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault with a weapon – two counts
  • Break and enter – two counts

Cochrane is charged with the following additional criminal offences:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Pointing a firearm – two counts
  • Possession of a firearm while prohibited
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm knowing the possession was unauthorized
  • Breaching a condition of a court release order – two counts

The investigation is continuing.
