Nine children were killed in a landmine explosion in Afghanistan’s southeastern province of Ghazni. Ghazni provincial administration official Hamidullah Nisar confirmed this information to AFP on Monday.

Hamidullah Nisar said, “The landmine was planted there during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Yesterday it suddenly exploded and 9 children died. Children were playing near the field where the mine was planted.

In 1979, the then Soviet Union launched an operation in Afghanistan. That campaign lasted for ten years. Mainly because of that campaign, the current Taliban forces emerged in the nineties of the last century.

During the operation, the Soviet forces planted landmines, mortars and various explosives in a wide area of the country. Most of them have not been deactivated yet.
