There are few things that scream “Canadian summer” quite like packing up your gear, rolling down the windows, and making the sun-drenched drive to Wasaga Beach. If you grew up anywhere near the Greater Toronto Area, chances are you’ve made the pilgrimage to dip your toes in the warm, shallow waters of Georgian Bay, stroll along the boardwalk, and maybe cruise the iconic drag strip at sunset.

Now, Wasaga Beach is taking its summer legacy one step further — by giving us the official soundtrack to match. The town recently launched a Spotify playlist titled The Official Songs of Summer, and honestly, it’s a brilliant move.

Sure, it might sound like a marketing gimmick — but it taps into something very real. Music is memory. Whether it’s Bryan Adams blasting through your car speakers or The Tragically Hip echoing around a beach bonfire, the right song can pin a moment in time forever. And in a place like Wasaga, where memories are made on repeat every summer, music feels like a natural extension of the experience.

Mayor Brian Smith put it well when he said, “For over 100 years the Town of Wasaga Beach has been Ontario’s iconic and most visited summer playground.” He’s not wrong. Wasaga has been the backdrop to countless family vacations, teenage road trips, and lazy days turned golden with sunburn and soft-serve. Adding a playlist to that tradition just makes sense.

What’s refreshing, too, is that the playlist isn’t a static list of nostalgia-heavy hits — though there’s plenty of those, with classics like Neil Young and Len’s Steal My Sunshine earning their well-deserved spots. It’s also a living list, open to suggestions from the public. This openness makes it feel more like a community mixtape than a top-down PR project. It says: This is yours too. Help shape it.

In an age when we’re constantly chasing “vibes,” it’s easy to overlook the simple joy of sharing songs that make you feel something — especially when they’re tied to a place that already holds a piece of your heart. So whether you’re poolside, beach-bound, or just stuck in city traffic with the A/C cranked, queue up Wasaga Beach’s summer playlist. It might just take you there.

And if it doesn’t have your summer anthem yet? Go ahead and suggest it. After all, summer isn’t just a season — it’s a soundtrack waiting to be played.
