I saw a video of Bangladeshi heroine Apu Biswas’s bad English going viral.
Because of their gossip about Shakib Khan, they don’t have the interest to talk about him, his sister and their common life.
But in this specific incident, I found the woman’s fault, why did she go to the program to speak in English? A program in Bangladesh, a Bengali contestant, why should she speak in English with him?
As a Bangladeshi, not knowing English is not a famous thing at all, it is a foreign language, like Arabic, Persian, French. Not knowing any foreign language is not a sign of being uneducated at all. That is normal.
Rather, those who cannot speak their mother tongue, Bengali, properly are famous, unsmart and uneducated. Or when they open their mouths, regionalism comes out.
Meanwhile, don’t get me wrong, I said speaking in regional languages is famous, that is also a gem in the diverse treasure trove of Bengali language. Rather, those who can speak Bengali and the regional languages of their own region with pure pronunciation are incredibly talented.
The biggest problem in our country is that English is considered a status symbol skill instead of a language. You will see this tendency among those who suddenly become banana trees with their fingers swollen, like an egg from a village that suddenly turns into an omelette when it comes to the city. If you go to their ancestors, you will not find many people with BA or MA degrees. They are proud to be the first among the fourteen groups to learn ABCD.
However, if you go to France, a country next to England, to speak English, no one will say anything. They try to speak English in Portugal, they speak English in Spain, they speak English in Latin America….China, Japan, Russia, no country has such a loose understanding of English as we do. Even in America itself, people of Spanish origin, such as Mexicans or Latin Americans, do not speak English because they do not know it. Because of them, American companies are forced to hire Spanish-speaking people.
Meanwhile, the surprising fact is that we are the nation that gave our lives to establish the right to our mother tongue.
