Porter Airlines’ pilots have officially signaled that it’s time for change and frankly, it’s about time. By serving formal notice to begin collective bargaining with management, these aviators are making it clear they’re ready to have a real voice in their workplace.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which Porter pilots joined just last month, brings muscle and experience to the table. Under the guidance of Captain Andrew Axson and the Master Executive Council, the pilots are preparing for their first-ever collective agreement. This isn’t just paperwork; it’s a turning point. For years, Porter has built a reputation as a sleek, growing airline, but growth means little if the people at the controls don’t feel respected and fairly compensated.

Look no further than Air Canada for context. ALPA pilots there endured more than a year of negotiations before ratifying a deal late last year, narrowly avoiding a strike. Porter’s management should take that as a cautionary tale: drawn-out talks and brinkmanship help no one not the company, not the pilots, and certainly not the passengers.

What Porter’s pilots are asking for isn’t radical. They want a contract that reflects their skill, their dedication, and their critical role in keeping travelers safe and the airline profitable. In an era when airlines are posting strong revenues and passengers are returning in droves, it’s only fair that the people flying the planes share in that success.

Porter often prides itself on its customer-friendly service and boutique brand. Now it has an opportunity to extend that philosophy to the workforce that literally keeps the airline in the air. The ball is in management’s court: meet the pilots with respect and urgency, and show that Porter values not just its passengers, but the professionals in the cockpit as well.
