Imagine two working professionals: one in a job where financial corruption is impossible, even if desired, and another in a position with ample opportunities for bribery and financial misconduct. Between someone who harbors dishonesty in their heart but has no means to act on it and someone who resists temptation despite having opportunities to be corrupt, Allah prefers the one who actively chooses honesty. No matter how much wealth, power, or status a dishonest person accumulates, it is ultimately worthless in Allah’s eyes. If someone spends their youth engaging in bribery and corruption but later in old age donates to charity, attends religious institutions, and adopts a pious appearance, will their past sins be forgiven? Allah, the Most Merciful, may forgive transgressions against Him, but He does not absolve the rights of those who have been wronged—justice must be sought from the ones harmed.
If Allah grants someone a profession where honesty is easier, it is a divine blessing. One should seek a livelihood where staying honest requires only minor personal struggle rather than a constant battle against greed. With so many options available, choosing the most lawful means of earning is essential. Everyone should reflect on their mortality—will wealth accumulated through dishonesty, power gained by depriving others of their rights, or the cries of those wronged benefit them in the afterlife, or will it become a burden? Many powerful individuals, wealthy landlords, and people of status have turned to dust, their remains indistinguishable from the earth. No one even remembers who lies in many graves, yet in their time, they wielded great influence. The ones enjoying their accumulated wealth today hardly know their ancestors’ names.
Living an honest life is crucial. Financial transparency alone does not define honesty—it includes integrity of character, honesty in speech, and sincerity in fulfilling responsibilities. Exploiting others for personal gain, depriving people of their rightful dues, or causing mental or physical harm for selfish purposes—these are all forms of dishonesty. Truly honest people earn respect from the hearts and minds of others. However, because honest individuals are scattered and isolated, corruption prevails. The best way to assess whether a society is on the right path is to examine the status of honest individuals within it. Unfortunately, in our society, honest individuals are absent from leadership positions and rarely receive recognition. While corruption is often state-sponsored, honesty seldom gets rewarded. The deterioration of society, the collapse of social order, and the institutionalization of bribery and corruption are largely due to the absence of ethical individuals in responsible positions.
The primary concerns in our society revolve around income, business profits, and interest rates, yet there is little scrutiny over unjust enrichment. Farmers despair over the prices of their produce while middlemen exploit both them and consumers. Usurers drive the poor into deeper poverty, yet these injustices do not trouble society’s elites. People criticize others for earning through illicit means while they themselves and their families amass fortunes through dishonesty. In a society where bribery and corruption become as normalized as salaries, it is evident that the system has decayed. There are very few who strive to live honestly, yet some still remain—those who adhere to religious principles, uphold patriotism, and let their conscience be their judge. They endure hardship daily in their struggle to survive lawfully.
Opportunities for change do not come often. The mass uprising of July-August 2024 has given the nation a golden opportunity for reform. This revolution must not be hijacked. Corrupt officials, bribery-takers, and plunderers must be eradicated. More than a mere change of power, the nation needs moral reform. If the interim government, with its mandate from the people, fails to change the mindset of the masses, it would be a tragic failure. If reforms are not enacted now, few will hold hope for a better future for Bangladesh. Bribery-takers must be identified and removed, unscrupulous businessmen must be stopped, and all exploitative syndicates must be dismantled. The country and its people seek liberation from the grip of corrupt, oppressive forces.
After 53 years of independence, the extreme inequalities that have emerged must be corrected. The lives lost and the sacrifices made to bring about this shift in power must be honored by bringing real change, not just transferring authority from one hand to another. If only power shifts but corruption remains, dishonesty and exploitation will return in new forms, controlled by new faces, in the same old system. Without a fundamental change in policies and the effective implementation of laws, the cycle of corruption will continue. However, if the nation unites with determination, we can change our destiny—if we truly wish to do so.
