Indian musician Anup Ghoshal has passed away. He died on Friday (December 15) at 2.30 pm while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata.

He was 78 years old. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the death of Anup Ghosal. The song ‘Dekho Re Nayan Mele Jovan Bahar’ from Satyajit Ray’s ‘Gupi Gain Bagha Bain’ made Anup Ghoshal popular.

Besides Thumri, Khayal, Bhajan, Ragapradhan, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Dwijendra Geeti, Anup Ghoshal also sang modern Bengali songs. His reputation spread mainly by singing Nazrul Geeti.

Anup Ghoshal was born and brought up in a family associated with the world of music. Father Amulichandra Ghoshal, Mother Lavanya Ghoshal. Anup Ghoshal’s passion for the world of music also grew from his mother Lavanya Ghosal.

Anup Ghoshal graduated in Humanities from Ashutosh College and later received Masters and PhD degrees from Rabindra Bharati University. The form and feel of Nazrul Geeti was the subject of his research. West Bengal Government awarded him ‘Nazrul Smriti Award’ in 2011 and ‘Sangeet Mahasamman’ in 2013.
