Mumbai’s Somaiya School principal Parveen Shaikh has been suspended for liking pro-Palestinian posts on social media, according to reports. He has been accused of advocating ‘anti-Hamas, anti-Islamist, and anti-Hindu’ views through his association with such posts on social media.

In a statement shared on social media platform X on Tuesday, Somaiya School said Parveen Shaikh’s personal social media activities were “completely contrary to the values we cherish” and therefore “out of concern” and after “carefully considering the matter”, the school management contacted her. “After careful consideration, the management is severing Parveen Sheikh’s relationship with Somaiya Vidyavihar to ensure that our unity and inclusiveness principles are not compromised,” the educational institution added in the statement.

According to NDTV, Parveen Sheikh was associated with Somaiya School for about 12 years. He took over as principal seven years ago. According to Parveen Shaikh’s LinkedIn profile, she has over 30 years of experience in the field of education.

Parveen Shaikh has expertise in coaching, mentoring and professional development of pre-service and in-service teachers. He is also skilled in curriculum design and creating effective classroom layouts.

Apart from teaching, Parveen Sheikh is also involved in school audit, NDTV reported.

In the face of controversy, the school authorities issued a statement explaining the reasons for the decision to remove the principal, according to Indian media. They said, ‘Parveen Sheikh’s personal social media activity has recently come to our attention. He held a leading position in the Somaiya school. We find his actions inconsistent with the values we cherish.’

The statement further claimed, ‘We strongly support freedom of expression. We also think that freedom of expression is not absolute. Opinions should be expressed keeping in mind the responsibility towards others and protecting their dignity. Somaiya Vidyavihara severed ties with Parveen Sheikh to ensure our unity and inclusive policy.’
