At least 39 people have been killed in days of heavy rains and flash floods in southwestern Pakistan. In a statement on Monday, the National Disaster Management Authority of Pakistan said that there is a risk of more rain in the future.
According to news agency AFP, Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, has seen the highest number of deaths so far. 21 people were killed by lightning in the province between Friday and Sunday.
At least eight people were also killed in the western province of Balochistan, where authorities have declared a state of emergency. Schools in the province have been ordered to remain closed on Monday and Tuesday. Vast areas of the Baloch coastal town of Pasni were inundated by rainwater.
Chairman of the city’s municipal committee Noor Ahmad Kalmati told Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper that Pasni looks like a big lake at the moment as flash floods have entered human settlements and major commercial areas.
In addition, landslides occurred due to torrential rains and flash floods in the country’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Many houses were damaged and trees were uprooted, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the country’s meteorological department has predicted more rain in the next few days. As a result, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority has warned of more landslides and flash floods.
