There has been a terrible attack on a military base in Pakistan. At least 24 people were killed. Many others were injured in the attack. The attack and casualties occurred at a police station in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday (December 12).
The police station that was attacked was used as a base by the Pakistan Army. Reuters and Al Jazeera reported this information in separate reports on Tuesday.
However, Al Jazeera reports that the death toll is at least 20.
Gunmen have attacked a military base in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 20 people, a military source told Al Jazeera. It is feared that the number of casualties may increase.
The attack took place on Tuesday in Daraban town of Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
Al Jazeera reports that at least 28 people were injured in the attack, according to Aizaz Mehmood, an official with the state rescue agency. “We can still hear the gunshots,” he said.
On the other hand, citing two security officials, Reuters reported that at least 24 people were killed in the attack on the police station. Originally, this police station was used as a base camp by the Pakistan Army.
“Many of the dead were killed while sleeping and in civilian clothes,” AFP news agency reported, citing an official. So we are still investigating whether they are all army personnel.
According to officials, after the gunfight, militants drove a vehicle loaded with explosives into the main gate of the police station.
A Pakistani group called Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP) claimed responsibility for the attack, Reuters said. The TJP said its fighters targeted the Pakistani army.
Incidentally, this group named TJP has recently made its debut, according to Reuters.
Al Jazeera says the TJP claims to be linked to the TTP, the South Asian country’s main armed outlaw group. Basically, TTP has been targeting the state and state institutions for years.
Besides, Dera Ismail Khan city is a former stronghold of TTP. The banned group wants to overthrow the government in Pakistan and introduce strict religious laws. Violence has increased in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in recent times and there have been several deadly attacks.
At least 101 people were killed in a suicide bombing at a mosque in the provincial capital Peshawar in January this year.
