Drivers travelling through the busy intersection of Dundas Street East and Hurontario Street will need to be extra cautious over the next few weeks as new overnight construction gets underway.

Metrolinx has announced that crews will begin installing underground duct banks at the intersection as part of ongoing work for the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. The work is scheduled to run from October 15 to November 1, 2024, with construction taking place six nights a week, excluding Sundays.

To reduce the impact on daytime traffic, lane restrictions will be in effect only overnight between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. During daytime hours, metal plates will be placed over the construction area to allow vehicles to pass through the intersection.

According to Metrolinx, the work will focus on the south side of the intersection, with the eastbound lanes of Dundas Street East and both directions of Hurontario Street expected to be the most affected.

Residents living nearby have also been advised to expect noise and vibrations overnight, as heavy equipment such as trucks, excavators, and backhoes will be in operation. Metrolinx noted that the work is being carried out under a City of Mississauga noise by-law exemption, which allows for nighttime construction.

“Every effort will be made to minimize disruptions,” the agency said, adding that both residents and local businesses may still notice construction-related noise during the overnight hours.

The Hurontario LRT project was originally expected to be completed this year. While no official delay has been announced, Metrolinx has confirmed that track installation will extend into 2025, signaling that work on the corridor is far from finished.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow posted signage while construction continues at one of Mississauga’s key intersections.
