The True Test of Power Lies in Restraint, Not Revenge

Patrick D Costa

Vengeance feeds itself. It grows stronger the more it is nourished—until one day, it devours you from the inside.

Once upon a time, you were oppressed—that is a truth no one can deny. But when the tides shift and you find yourself holding power, using that very power to become an oppressor yourself only ensures one thing: history will repeat itself. And when it does, you’ll find yourself on the receiving end once more. This, too, is a truth. Because the world isn’t a straight line—it’s a circle. Nothing here is fixed or forever. Every event on this planet unfolds in a cycle. What goes around truly does come around.

So now, the ball is in your court. You have the rare chance to end a dark chapter—simply by choosing to play fair. If you meet power with justice and compassion instead of vengeance, history will remember you. But if you embrace retaliation, you’ll only become part of another cycle of hate, one with no end.

Vengeance feeds itself. It grows stronger the more it is nourished—until one day, it devours you from the inside. We forget that hate only leads to destruction. But love—love is a dangerous, beautiful contagion. Spread it, and even the hardest hearts might soften. Perhaps you’ve been taken advantage of in life. That’s okay. If your experience can prevent someone else from being wronged, then that’s not a loss—it’s a quiet victory. After all, an illness only stops spreading when the chain of infection is broken.

Our politics today suffers from this same affliction. Politicians seem to be the slowest learners. When out of power, they speak of ethics, compassion, and fairness. But the moment power is within reach, those values vanish. Power not only corrupts—it narrows the mind. Yet politics, at its core, was meant to be a service of the heart—a commitment to the greater good.

Time never stays loyal to anyone. The one living through night doesn’t know that dawn is just ahead. And for those basking in daylight, adversity may be silently waiting. Change is inevitable—no one escapes it.

Conscience remains the greatest strength of any human being. Sadly, we live in a time when fewer people choose to follow it. Instead, chaos is glorified, aggression is nurtured, and selfish ambition takes the lead. But remember this: the higher you rise, the greater the fall if you’re not grounded.

There are universal truths that stand firm regardless of time or place—justice, restraint, humanity, and conscience. If we, as a society, could remain loyal to these, we wouldn’t be drowning in hatred, violence, and division.

So let’s choose love over vengeance. Let’s take the pain of the past not as fuel for retribution, but as a guide for growth. And let that effort begin with you, with me, with all of us—together.
