Now is the time for bold decisions in crime prevention

Patrick D Costa

The deterioration of law and order has made public life unbearable.

Even if it sounds harsh and feels difficult to accept, the immediate solution to stopping such muggings and horrific rapes is to identify a few perpetrators and impose unimaginably severe punishments on them—then publicize those punishments widely! Do I sound ruthless for saying this? But do you not feel any compassion for those who are being killed by muggers’ bullets? Taking the side of innocent people is crucial. Ensuring people’s safety is even more important.

The deterioration of law and order has made public life unbearable. There is no security anywhere—not for ordinary people, nor for those responsible for ensuring their safety. This wave of mugging, rape, and chaos seems to be part of a bigger scheme. It is no longer a question of whether enemies or allies are behind it—there is no time to figure that out. Public safety must be restored by delivering the harshest punishments to criminals.

Women are the most vulnerable, but even men are not safe. Staying at home is not a solution either. Things cannot continue like this, nor should they be allowed to. We must stand up against this. Criminal activities must be suppressed wherever they arise. The police are spending sleepless nights, the administration is under pressure, and the government is embarrassed. The people must take a stand.

Punishing looters severely does not mean executing them—it means crippling their malicious intent. If necessary, the state should even feed them while keeping them detained, but their activities must be crushed. No one commits robbery or mugging out of hunger in this era; there is a scent of power in these crimes, a hidden force behind them—evidence suggests so. Otherwise, there is no logical reason for this sudden surge in criminal activity. If these criminals are not stopped, the country’s reputation will suffer, and society will bear the greatest loss. People’s trust will erode, and survival itself will become difficult.

If a few incidents can be suppressed, if a few perpetrators can be given exemplary punishment and that punishment is widely publicized, everything will cool down. For now, there is no alternative to strict action. Everyone must gather courage and step forward. Just stop two or three such incidents, and all these crimes will come to an end!

Even if there is some debate over the death penalty for muggers, there should be no leniency for rapists—the only appropriate punishment for rape is public execution. Executions do happen inside prison walls, but why not conduct them publicly? Hold public executions, broadcast them live—such crimes will drastically decrease. Ensuring women’s safety is of utmost importance. A woman is my mother, sister, wife, or daughter. If we do not act firmly now, this country will become uninhabitable. A place without security is no place for human life!

Will everything fall into the grip of inhuman criminals? Stop them, and stop tolerating this! This is a society of humans. Humans are called Ashraful Makhluqat—the noblest of creations! Have people forgotten that?
