6 members of a Sri Lankan family were killed in Canada

Six members of a Sri Lankan family in Canada were stabbed to death. Among the dead are a mother and four children. Such indiscriminate killings are rare in Canada.

The incident took place in the capital Ottawa on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday. The incident sparked a stir across Canada.

The father of the family was also injured in the attack. He was admitted to the hospital.

Police said the six victims were newcomers to Canada, the youngest of whom was just 2 months old.

Police arrested 19-year-old male student Fabrio D-Joysa, who went to Canada from Sri Lanka in this incident. He has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. D-Joysa knew the family and lived in the same house.

The victims are a 35-year-old woman and her four children aged 7, 4, 2 years and 2 months; Another 40-year-old man known to this family.

Police went to Barrhaven on the scene after receiving an emergency call shortly before 11:00 p.m. local time in Ottawa on Wednesday. Police Chief Eric Stubbs said police officers on the scene quickly identified the suspect and arrested him without incident.

Officers then entered the home and found the victims.

“This is one of the most tragic events in our city,” Ottawa Mayor Mark Sucliffe said in a social media post.

Indiscriminate killings are rare in Canada. Ottawa, a city of one million residents, saw 14 murders in 2023 and 15 in 2022.
