The Canadian government is developing a national strategy for using artificial intelligence (AI) within federal operations. Treasury Board President Anita Anand announced the initiative on May 27th, highlighting its goals to:

  • Boost Efficiency: Streamline government processes and make interacting with public services easier for Canadians and businesses.
  • Enhance Services: Utilize AI to improve the quality of services offered by the federal government.
  • Strengthen Research & Science: Foster advancements in AI research and development within Canada.

Anand emphasized that AI would primarily automate routine tasks, not replace public service jobs. The government plans to establish a dedicated unit for retraining existing employees and actively recruit top tech talent.

Transparency and Ethics are Key

Widespread consultations are planned before finalizing the strategy, ensuring transparency and public input. Additionally, the government is committed to responsible AI use, adhering to privacy laws and preventing discriminatory applications.

Leading by Example

This strategy positions the Canadian government as a leader in responsible AI adoption, setting a positive example for the private sector. The announcement coincides with eight more organizations joining the voluntary federal AI code of conduct, including Mastercard and Lenovo.

The Road Ahead

While no deadline has been set for finalizing the strategy, the government is actively incorporating AI into various aspects of its operations. This initiative positions Canada at the forefront of responsible AI development and implementation for public service improvement.
