Porter Airlines has officially launched commercial passenger service from the newly developed terminal at Montreal Metropolitan Airport in Saint-Hubert, marking a significant step in the carrier’s expansion strategy and offering travelers an alternative gateway to the Montreal region.
The first flights departed today from the South Shore airport, with Porter introducing routes to 11 destinations across Canada. The network includes major cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto, strengthening the airline’s presence in key domestic markets.
Porter Airlines President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Deluce expressed confidence in the project’s success, saying early demand has surpassed expectations. According to Deluce, the airline has already seen strong booking numbers and expects the new airport to gain popularity among both business and leisure travelers.
One of the airport’s biggest advantages, he noted, is its accessibility. Company research suggests that nearly half of the Greater Montreal population can reach Saint-Hubert more quickly than Montréal–Trudeau International Airport. Porter believes this convenience could encourage passengers to choose the new facility for future trips.
However, transportation experts caution that shifting traveler preferences may not happen overnight. Archie Huang, a transportation specialist at Concordia University, said passengers typically consider several factors when selecting an airport, including flight schedules, ticket prices, and destination options. While easier access is attractive, it may take time before travelers change long-standing habits.
Huang added that business travelers often prioritize reliability and convenient flight times, whereas vacationers tend to focus more on finding affordable fares.
Meanwhile, Jacques Roy, a logistics professor at HEC Montréal, believes the new service has the potential to carve out a strong market, particularly among residents of Montreal’s South Shore. He said competitive pricing and reduced travel times to the airport could make Saint-Hubert an appealing choice for many passengers.
The launch represents a major milestone for both Porter Airlines and Montreal Metropolitan Airport. As operations expand and more travelers experience the new facility, industry observers will be watching closely to see whether the airport can establish itself as a viable alternative to the city’s primary international gateway.
